Potty Training

Potty training is one of those big childhood milestones that can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Every parent looks forward to saying goodbye to diapers, but the journey isn’t always straightforward. The truth? Potty training looks different for every child, and that’s okay.

When Should You Start?

Most children are ready to begin potty training between 18 months and 3 years, but there’s no magic age. Instead of focusing on a number, watch for signs of readiness:

  • Staying dry for 2 hours or more
  • Showing interest in the toilet or potty chair
  • Being able to pull pants up and down
  • Letting you know (with words or gestures) when they’ve gone in their diaper
  • Wanting to be more independent

💡 Tip: If your child resists strongly, it may be best to pause and try again in a few weeks.

Setting the Stage for Success

  • Introduce the potty early: Let your child get comfortable sitting on it—clothed at first if they prefer.
  • Model the behavior: Kids learn by watching. Let them see older siblings or parents using the toilet.
  • Use positive reinforcement: Praise, stickers, or small rewards can make progress exciting.
  • Dress for success: Choose clothing that’s easy to pull on and off.

Daytime vs. Nighttime Training

Daytime potty training usually comes first. Staying dry overnight can take much longer, sometimes even into the early school years. Be patient—this is normal! Using training pants or pull-ups at night is perfectly fine.

Common Challenges:

Accidents happen, they’re a normal part of the process. Keep a calm tone, help your child clean up, and move on.  If you notice fear of the toilet, try a small potty chair before transitioning to the big toilet. Remember, regression can happen and that's ok. Common causes of regression can be illness, travel, or big life changes like starting daycare, moving or even welcoming a new baby at home, all this can cause setbacks. With reassurance, most kids get back on track.

Potty training is a big step toward independence, for both kids and parents! Remember: there’s no rush, no “right” age, and no perfect method. With patience, encouragement, and a little humor, your child will get there.
